Program Description:


Length: 14 weeks (May 12, 2022 - August 12, 2022)
Class Sessions: Monday - Friday, 7:00 PM - 8:50 PM (U.S. Eastern Daylight Time; UTC−04:00) followed by individual conference time with instructors; Additional coursework and activities to be completed as assigned outside of class hours.

Learn an entire year's worth of college-level Japanese in one summer! This program, offered entirely online, features:
  • 10 credits of intensive Japanese language study offered at levels* 1 (elementary), 2 (lower intermediate), and 3 (intermediate), and 4 (advanced). No prior language study is required for level 1! Visit our website for more details on JCMU Japanese language courses.
    • ​*The ability to offer each level is contingent upon reaching the minimum enrollment requirement for that level. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us.
  • Synchronous video instruction sessions 5 days a week (Monday – Friday) followed by individual conference time with an instructor.
    • Daily instruction and assigned coursework will address listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students apply to their desired level and a placement assessment will be conducted during the post-acceptance phase. 
  • Opportunities for language exchange with students in Japan.
  • Virtual fieldtrips to various sites in and around Shiga, Japan and activities for students to enjoy at their own pace.
    • Visits to Hikone Castle, the Lake Biwa Museum, local shrines or temples, a Japanese school, restaurants, and others.
    • Activities will include calligraphy, guided tutorials on Zazen sitting meditation, how to use the Japanese railway system, and more.
  • Each student will receive a parcel in the mail prior to the program start date filled with materials necessary for participation, Shiga products, and fun and informative items.


  • Melville Endowed Scholarship - $1,000 (3.0 GPA or higher; 4 awards)

JCMU will contact eligible students with instructions on how to apply during the post-acceptance process.

All students who complete the program will be eligible for a JCMU Returnee Scholarship toward the cost of a future JCMU study abroad program.
