Areas of Study:
Intensive Japanese Language, International Business, Management
Students who study abroad discover that stepping outside of their cultures to live and study in a foreign country influences their careers and educational choices, increases self-confidence, enhances cultural tolerance and understanding, and facilitates lifelong friendships. On this program, you can make Japan a part of your academic plan by combining coursework in Japanese language and culture, international business and management. Discover the historic city of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, right in the heart of Honshu (the main island of Japan). There, you will learn the language and unique culture of the Japan, which boasts the third-largest economy in the world.
While at JCMU, you will immerse yourself in Japanese language and culture. There are no language prerequisites, though: we offer beginner level courses all the way through advanced. You will get the chance to participate in a wide range of classroom activities, including practice with a Japanese student and sitting in on a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Through this, you will find that your ability to utilize Japanese on a day-to-day basis in Hikone will increase exponentially.
You will take the following classes each semester while you are on the program:
(5 credits) Intensive Japanese Language: During the first half of the program, daily instruction will address listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Beginner through advanced levels are all offered. No prior language study is required. Placement is based on exams at the beginning of the program.
(3 credits) International and Comparative Dimensions of Business: This course is designed to provide a general understanding of global business topics, international and cross-cultural studies of business decisions, enterprises, markets, and institutions. It covers functional aspects of business operations that any organization tackles internationally. Globalization of industries and its impact on firm competitiveness will also be addressed.
(3 credits) Managing Human Resources and Organizational Behavior: This course will provide an introduction to organizational behavior (OB) and human resource management (HR). Good OB/HR practices are a critical aspect of any organization, as they entail how jobs are designed, which employees get hired, what motivates those employees, how they are developed, evaluated and compensated, and what steps are taken to lead them. Put simply, if an organization wants high performing employees, then it must have good OB/HR practices.
(1 credit) JCMU Experience Course: The study abroad experience can be confusing and stressful for anyone. Learn more about why Japanese culture is the way it is, and discuss how your particular views are influencing your international education.
OPTIONAL - Additional Elective Course: Students may enroll in additional JCMU elective courses. Up to 15 total JCMU-based credits are included in the program fee. Elective course overload fees will apply if participants enroll in more than 15 credits at JCMU.
